New Saga rules

A quick game of Saga last night, using the 2nd edition rules for the first time.

I was using Anglo-Saxons; David was using Normans.

I found the new Angle-Saxon battleboard much more effective than the old one, albeit with a similar theme (large units). But the new rules that mean that even levy units get a Saga die if they are over 6 strong means that you aren’t being penalised for taking levy Great Fyrd like you were in the old rules. I never got to activate the ability to have the levt use the aggression of warriors (I think I only rolled 2 helmets in 6 turns), but it was still a crushing victory for the Saxons – with the right Saga dice and a 12-strong unit of levy, you can close ranks to give yourself hard cover, Close Ranks to give yourself 5 extra attack dice, and take 6 attack dice off the enemy as well. Painful…

The gallant Saxon Select Fyrd are emboldened by the presence of their Eorl behind them.
The Select Fyrd, having dealt with the Norman household knights on the hill, hunker down against the Norman crossbowmen.
The Norman knights prepare to charge across the field and into the Saxon lines, driving the cattle before them.
The Norman knights almost destroy the Select Fyrd holding the gate out of the field (you can see the last man falling back up the hill), but the Great Fyrd unit next to them prepare to counter-attack.
The last remaining Norman knights are charged from behind the hedge by the last remaining Saxon Great Fyrd.
